Cape Sounion is a beautiful historical place situated about 70 kilometers from Athens, a little bit more than one hour driving along the western coast of the Attica peninsula. It is easily reached by car or if you prefer with the group by bus. This promontory has a lot of interesting stories in Greek history and mythology, so it's recommended to take a tour with the guide or maybe read about it before visit.
The most famous attraction of Cape Sounion is the Temple of Poseidon, dedicated to the Greek god of the sea and other waters. The first temple was destroyed in 480 BC by Persians, so it was rebuilt in 444-440 BC on the ruins of the original one. 300 meters northeast of the Temple of Poseidon, are ruins of the Temple of Athena, built in 470 BC, but it's usually neglected because of the main attraction.
Temple of Poseidon makes an equilateral triangle with two other temples in Greece, Temple of Aphaia on the island Aegina and Parthenon in Athens. Cape Sounion is a perfect combination with Athens, morning can be used for exploring the city (recommended to visit one of the three famous temples - Parthenon), after the lunch relax on the top of the hill and finish your day with incredible sunset at Cape Sounion.
If you love the Greek history and architecture, this is the place you definitely must visit. And don't forget to bring your camera with you!
