This tour starts from our office in Barcelona from where we head off to visit Cardona and Montserrat.
The first destination is the fascinating Cardona's Salt Mountain Park, an important salt mine in Europe. Put on a helmet and explore the site, feeling like a true miner.
The next stop is the important medieval fortress the Cardona Castle, built in the IX century in Romanesque style. This fortress was built by order of the Count Wilfred the Hairy about whose life and actions you will get to hear from the local guide.
Before continuing with the trip, we will make a short break for a delicious brunch with local products that you can try.
After the break, we head off to Montserrat, magnificent mountain that got its name from Catalan words Mont meaning mount and Serrat meaning serrated because of its rocky geography. You will board a cog-wheel train that will take you up the mountain and provide you with breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding area and the impressive mountain, declared National Park in 1987. The local guide will be there to show you around, share with you important information about the place and show you the Monastery located on the mountain. This monastery, built in Gothic and Renaissance style, is a place of residence for around 80 monks of Saint Benedict. The monastery is famous because it is believed that the Madonna and Child appeared there in the cave of Santa Cova. A statue honoring this belief is kept at the monastery and is called La Moreneta, translated as the Black Madonna because of the darkening of the paint caused by smoke and incense.
After the guided visit, some free time is planned to taste 4 typical liquors of the area, shop locally-produced treats or visit exhibitions in Montserrat museum.
