Guide for visiting Korčula from Dubrovnik

Guide for visiting Korčula from Dubrovnik
Taking a day tour to visit Korčula while visiting Dubrovnik is a particularly good experience. Apart from visiting Korčula you will pass along the Pelješac peninsula where you will visit other interesting places such as the famous walls of Ston and the Ston salt mines, as well try some local wines from famous wine producers.

To arrive to Korčula, most tours take you by bus all the way to the town Orebić situated on the Pelješac peninsula. If we disregard the possible stops included in the tour, the drive itself lasts about 2 hours. From there you take a short boat ride to Korčula which lasts about 20 minutes. When approaching Korčula, the town looks like a fortification due to the big walls and towers surrounding the city. Most of what the city looks like today was build under the reign of Venice. Korčula is very famous for it's city plan that represents a fish bone and narrow streets reachable only by foot. Most of the architecture is built in gothic-renaissance style and it's fascinating to see that every house is marked by a family emblem which makes every facade unique. Korčula had one of the best stone masons which decorated the city as a whole putting special emphasis on important places such as city squares and cathedrals, which makes this city very beautiful.

One of the most visited places in Korčula is the birth house of the famous explorer Marko Polo which lived there in the 13th century. You will definitely hear a lot about him when you visit Korčula, so we will not go more into details about his life here. Apart from his house, other interesting places to visit include St. Marks Cathedral, the Revelin Tower, the Forteca Tower and the Korčula city walls.

The Korčula city center is currently being evaluated for getting placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

I booked this trip from the UK before our holiday. I had never used this company and they were one of the least advertised so I was a little apprehensive. Worry over ! As this trip was amazing! We were collected at the time stated by a very polite and knowledgeable driver Drajan and because only a small group were going on the trip we were picked up in a eight seater Mercedes van which was air-conditioned and very very comfortable. We were the first pick up so along the route we had to pick up the other six passengers then once everyone was in the car our little tour began with Drajan giving us lots of information along the way.First stop was for an hour at ston walls which gave you enough time to climb part of the wall and grab a coffee. We then drove down the peninsular where we had to get on the ferry across to Korcula Island. This island is a must visit with a very beautiful old town and lovely bays with crystal blue water plenty of places to eat and drink. We climbed to the top of the belltower in the centre of the old town the views from the top were amazing. The only downside to this trip was that we only had 2 1/2 hours roughly by the time we arrived on the ferry over to Korcula, personally I think 3 to 4 hours minimum would have been better. After leaving Korcula we then went back down the Peninsula to a lovely winery where we had wine tastings and then we could purchase some beautiful wine. All in all we had a fantastic day our driver was fabulous and we were lucky to share the car with some very nice people too.I would highly recommend happy to visit, very good value for money, confirmation was instant and a reminder of trip was emailed the day before.

Firstly I cannot thank Happt to Visit enough, from my first contact with them they have provided outstanding customer service. I made a mistake on the date of our tour and their patience and service was fantastic in helping sort things out. Now for the tour, 7 of us went some elderly, the bus was very comfortable, you are on the bus for quite a while so that is important. We stopped for about 30 minutes in Ston, very impressive walls and time for a coffee. Back on the bus, fantastic scenery as you drive through the wineries. The short boat trip was excellent as was our guide Danielle on the bus,.... Korcula is absolutely beautiful we had an English speaking guide who was with us about 40 minutes and then we were left for a couple of hours, we ate in a lovey restaurant on the front, bought wonderful Jewelry and wandered round the beautiful little streets. Winery on the way back ws very short but informative the wines were pleasant and the short stop added to the overall day. Overall a long day but definitely worth it as just beautiful and opportunity to see more of this wonderful country.
