Lisbon

Fatima is situated about 130 km north from Lisbon and it takes about 90 minutes to reach it by car. This means that you will have plenty of time to explore Fatima even if you take a half day tour. We do however recommend taking one of the full day tours to Fatima as they include stops to other interesting destinations in the vicinity of Fatima, such as Obidos, Alcobaça, Batalha and Nazare. Be sure to check the itineraries of the available tours to know which stops are included.

Fatima is a very important Christian pilgrimage sight and also an important tourist destination of Portugal. Today Fatima receives more then 4 million visitors each year. The Marian​ apparitions date to the year 1917 when 3 children reported to have sighted Virgin Mary which appeared to them over an oak tree. In the following months many other sightings have been reported, carrying messages from her. On her last apparition she wished for a chapel to be built on the sight. The chapel of apparitions was built in 1919 and in 1938 started the building of the famous Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary in Fatima. Apart from these monuments several other buildings were erected such as the Chapel of the Lausperene, a monument to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, 2 hostels - Our Lady of Sorrows and Our Lady of Mount Carmel, a part of the Berlin wall and individual monuments to several Popes and saints that had an important role in the story of Fatima. It's important to mention that the Marian​ Apparitions were officially acknowledged by the Catholic church.

Fatima is a must place to visit for any Christian visiting Portugal but even if you are not religious its a very interesting place full of stories that will keep you thinking what really happened.
