It is also known to be a place where the cult of Our Lady of Nazare was situated, according to the 12th-century legend. Commander Dom Fuas Roupinho was about to fall down into an abyss and was apparently saved by Lady of Nazare. He ordered a small chapel to be built as a sign of gratitude for the mercy she has given him. Later on, the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Nazare was built, in whose honor beautiful festivals are held in September. The citizens of Nazare are trying to keep their tradition alive for ages, which is why you can still see traditional puppets, nets, baskets and their cuisine which is based on fish and shellfish dishes. There is also one of the rarest holy places of the Visigoths in Portugal, 7th-century Chapel of Sao Giao.
