These two cities in the vicinity of Naples were completely destroyed by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. Luckily, due to a thick layer of ash and mud from the eruption, the cities are today preserved and are important archaeological and touristic localities in Italy.
We will start the tour from Rome, our driver will pick you up from your hotel in central Rome and take you to Pompeii where you will meet our guide. You won't have to waste time waiting in line to enter the site, our guide will take care of the entrance ticket without waiting in line. The city of Pompei was buried in ashes and lava for almost 2000 years, and as you walk around the place you will get a feeling the time stopped running there in the moment of the eruption. There are still bodies trapped in the moment, items on the streets and in houses left as they were in 79 AD.
There will be some free time for a lunch break after which we will go to the nearby Herculaneum, another historic city conserved after the eruption by a 25 meter thick layer of mud and lava. This city was in ancient Roman times a favorite vacation resort for rich Romans. In the city you can see the remains of beautiful buildings such as the House with the Mosaic Atrium, the Thermal Baths of the Forum, the Basilica, the House of the carbonised furniture, the Forum.
