If you already arrived to Sofia, you definitely saw the mountain Vitosha as it can be seen from any point in Sofia. Vitosha is one of the oldest nature parks in the Balkans and it's not popular only among tourist but locals enjoy spending the weekends hiking on this beautiful mountain that is very close to the city.
While for tourist we recommend taking one the available guided tours to make the most of your time visiting the mountain, locals usually make use of the available bus lines and also rope lines that where recently installed.
On first look, the mountain looks like a giant dome. The mountain is 19 km long and 17 km wide so it covers a huge area. The highest peek of the mountain, called "Cherni vrh" or literally translated black peak, has an altitude of 2290 m. Most tours will take you to the top where you will have an opportunity to have lunch. On this mountain top, a meteorological station was built in 1935 which is still functional and it also serves as a shelter for mountaineers and there is a restaurant available.
The mountain is suitable for sport activities such as hiking, mountain biking and skiing. During winter a popular tour of the mountain is hiking with the traditional snow shoes which is an amazing adventure. However, be well prepared and most importantly wear warm clothes! The mountain is also very rich in biological diversity and it's a popular destination for bird watching enthusiasts.
Being so close to Sofia and being a really beautiful sight to enjoy nature, we highly recommend spending a day exploring Vitosha mountain!
