The Dalmatian region has a
very rich history of wine making and produces a lot of different wines. Due to the limited production capacities a lot of the grape types and wines are not so famous in the world but are still delicious and win a lot of awards on global wine competitions.
Probably the most famous grape which originates from Dalmatia is
Zinfandel (red) which migrated to the U.S. almost 200 years ago and it’s now grown on about 10% of all the vineyards in California. It originates from a small village Kaštela near Split – where it was almost forgotten until the link to the US was discovered. Now it is being bottled again and you can ask for the
Crljenak Kaštelanski which is made from Zinfandel grapes. The second is
Plavac Mali which was recently discovered that it related to Zinfandel (you can try the famous wines
Dingač and Postup). From white wines we can suggest
Pošip (most famous Pošip wines are
Pošip Smokvica and Pošip Čara) and
Žlahtina (most famous
Vrbnička Žlahtina).
All in all, it’s a great experience to take a wine tour from Split. Apart from very good wines and friendly atmosphere, the Zinfandel story is really interesting to hear in more detail. Here we selected the tours we highly recommend, so be sure to check your preference and find the best wine tasting and winery tour for you while visiting Split!
