Međugorje is by far the most visited Christian religious place in the region and one of the rare touristic religious places that are still able to keep the calm and spiritual atmosphere while still welcoming large number of tourists. Međugorje is situated about 2 hours driving from Split, and so you can expect to spend a full day visiting this city. Please note that Međugorje is situated in Bosna and Hercegovina, so make sure you bring your travel documents when joining one of the tours.
When taking a tour to Međugorje from Split, you will most likely visit Mostar as well, a popular city only about 30 minutes driving from Međugroje, famous for being a city divided by 2 different cultures, Muslims and Christians, being physically divided only by the river Neretva. Over the river is also the iconic old bridge with a very rich history.
Apart from the initial claims, the 6 children, now adults, are claiming to receive sings and messages from the Virgin Mary on a regular basis.
The Marian apparitions were recently investigated by Vatican emissaries, and to quote specifically: "they expressed positive findings regarding the first apparitions but expressed doubt concerning the rest". Pope Francis said in an interview that regardless of the findings, the importance of Međugorje as a sacred and spiritual place cannot be denied.
Međugorje is a definite must visit for any Catholic, and if you came so close to Međugorje it would be a shame not to visit it.
