Top 10 Things to do in Split

Split is a great place to spend your holidays and in recent years it got very popular among other tourist destinations. The city has a lot to offer and apart from the activities in town, the position of Split allows for a lot of daily tours to nearby places. A lot of travel agencies are operating many different tours in this area so we will try to help you by pointing the “must do” while visiting Split with references where to book those services. Those tours are a suggestion to enrich your stay from the point of view of a local. We hope you will have a great time!
visit the national park krka

1. Visit the National Park Krka

The Krka National Park is named after the river Krka, and the national park covers the mid-to-lower part of it. The river has a lot of stunning waterfalls and it allows its visitors to have a beautiful day walking around the park over wooden pathways allowing you to see the river up close. It’s very close to Split, it’s suitable for everyone and it will leave you breathless, so this is our number one choice. You can see all the tours from Split to Krka, or take a look at all tours and tickets to Krka

Take a boat tour to one of the nearby islands

2. Take a boat tour to one of the nearby islands

Split is surrounded by several islands that are relatively close, most famous being Brač (famous for the “Golden horn beach”), Hvar (famous for its rugged coastline and rich history) and Vis (famous for the “Blue Cave” on the nearby small island Biševo and very beautiful coastal villages). Getting so close to the Mediterranean sea and not taking a boat tour, in our opinion it would be such a waste so, take a look at all the boat tours offered in Split.

Discover the old city of Dubrovnik

3. Discover the old city of Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik is one of the most famous cities in Croatia for its rich history and most of all for the medieval city walls that surround the city. It attracts the most tourists in the region and that is for a reason. However, Dubrovnik can get very crowded and not so cheap. Also the trip is about 4 hours by bus from Split so be ready for patience (even though the coastline is very beautiful). On the plus side we think that it’s much better to visit Dubrovnik for one day rather then too sleep in Dubrovnik, so we still think it’s a great option for spending your time when you are visiting Split. Take a look at all tours from Split to Dubrovnik.

Visit the National Park Plitvice Lakes

4. Visit the National Park Plitvice Lakes

In our opinion this is the most beautiful national park in Croatia. It’s a series of connected lakes cascading into one another, and taking a small boat around the lakes it’s just something out of this world. The only downside it takes about 3 hours to get there and the ticket to Plitvice is somewhat more expensive than to Krka, so it falls on the 4.th place on our list. Take a walking tour of Split

5. Take a walking tour of Split

Split is very famous for its very old history (more than 1700 years) so getting some info about the place you are staying is probably a good idea. Learn about the founder of the city (the roman emperor Dioklecijan) and about the palace that was the foundation of the city. You will probably get more interesting info about the city then from any other source, so we strongly suggest it. View all the walking tours of Split.

Visit Mostar and Međugorje

6. Visit Mostar and Međugorje

Another great option if you would like to see a bit of a different culture. Mostar - the city divided into two parts, the Muslim and the Christian, only connected by the old bridge (how the city got its name “Stari Most” -> Old Bridge). It hides a very interesting story including the destruction and the rebuilding of the bride. Međugorje – the city famous for the Cristian religion where the believers talk about the showings of the virgin Mary. Since then it attracts a lot of tourists and it radiates with spiritual and holy atmosphere. Both cities are located in the country of Bosna and Hercegovina so it offers a nice change of scenery. View all tours to Mostar and Međugorje.

Take a Game of thrones tour

7. Take a Game of thrones tour

Split was one of the locations where the popular HBO show “Game of Thrones” was filmed so if you are a fan, this is a great opportunity to see all the local filming locations, which were chosen for a reason: they look awesome and give that medieval look that the show required. You will of course learn the real and rich history of the places you visit. View all Game of Thrones tours form Split.

Go Rafting on the river Cetina

8. Go Rafting on the river Cetina

Nearby Split there is a great river for rafting, and if you never tried it this is the place! Going down the fast streams of the river Cetina surrounded by the beautiful canyon is something that everyone should experience. It’s not that difficult as it might sound so you can check it out regardless of your age. View all rafting tours from Split.

Experience adrenaline with Zipline

9. Experience adrenaline with Zipline

A new adrenaline sport in the canyon of Cetina, you attach yourself to a steel line and go from side to side of the canyon hanging from it. Sound extreme? It absolutely is, but after you go down the first line the fear will be gone and you can continue to enjoy the following 7 lines. The staff is really nice and they put a lot of emphasis on safety. Book Zipline tours and tickets.

Go Sea Kayaking

10. Go Sea Kayaking

If you have good stamina, we think this is one of the best way to experience the surrounding costal area and the sea. There are a lot of options and agencies that offer different tours so be sure to check all kayaking tours in Split.

On excursion: Full Day Tour to Bol Hvar and Pakleni Islands From Split
Five star

We had a fantastic trip. Our boat captain was friendly and helpful - and where I'm terrified of boats and frequently get seasick, I had no problems. The boat goes fast enough that you're not rocking in waves, and there isn't enough traffic on the water that you don't hit too many wakes. While there aren't toilet facilities on the boat, there are at each of the stops. Even though it was Saturday in late June and temps in the 30sC, none of the beaches/facilities were too busy and all were incredibly clean. It was nice being on the water where we could catch some cool breezes on such a hot day. I definitely recommend this trip as opposed to sitting on the same beach all day. Thank you to the booking agent and boat team!!
