Cathedral of St.James, built over a hundred years, is the testimony of perseverance, sacrifice and faith of generations of inhabitants of Sibenik. Stands out in many ways, not only in Croatian, but also in European architecture: it is entirely built of stone, without any other materials. Unique is by the brave structure of stone slabs and ribs, without any binding material; also unique among renesanse churches with its trefoil front facade; finally, is unique in accordance of architecture and a row of 71 realistic portraits on the apses.
Documents from the period of construction of the cathedral bear witness to the entire community contribution to its building, but many individuals, including the largest number of local stonemasons, builders and artisans. Among them is the most important Juraj Matveyev Dalmatian, originating from Zadar, with which Šibenik inhabitants, in 1441 concluded their agreement on his taking artisian duty on Sibenik's Cathedral. Cathedral, together with the Renaissance town hall and surrounding churches, palaces and Rector's Palace, which today houses the county museum, constitutes probably the most beautiful square in Croatian urban heritage.
