Temple of Poseidon

Temple of Poseidon is situated at Cape Sounion, at a height of almost 60 meters, surrounded by the sea. That's the reason why a lot of tourists come to admire colorful sunsets and view over the sea. Poseidon - Greek god of the sea, was one of the Twelve Olympians and very important in Greek religion and mythology.

The original temple was destroyed in second Persian invasion of Greece (480 BC), occurred during Greco-Persian Wars. The temple was rebuilt in 444-440 BC, on the ruins of a old one dating from the Archaic period. It was built in typical hexastyle, with front portico (a porch leading to the entrance of a building) and six Doric columns (with the simple circular capitals at the top of columns).
