Pentagonal Tower

(5.0/5 based on 5 reviews)
Pentagonal tower is a fortress along the former city gate to the  historic center of Porec. Located at the entrance to the main street - Decumanus, place where from the  ancient times was the border between the city and fertile land. Its present form Pentagonal Tower was given in 1447, during the podesta Nicolo de Lyon. Its emblem is engraved with the initials on the east side. Above the emblem there is a relief of a winged lion, symbol of Venetian power, with the Latin text of the Gospel of Matthew „Fecite iustitiam et dabo pacem in finibus vestris“ ("Be fair and I will give peace to your city"). The builder of the tower was Iohannes de Paris, and his son Lazaro designed the relief of a lion, in which had carved their names. This is the only Venetian lion signed by the author on the eastern Adriatic coast. Archaeological research has confirmed that the tower was rebuilt several times from ancient times to Middle Ages. Opposite to  Pentagonal tower was another square tower. Both city gate  and the tower were destroyed in the 19th century, after losing its centuries-defensive function
