We met our lovely and knowledgeable guide, Vines (pronounced Venus) at the docking place of our cruise ship. We booked the tour through Happy to Visit but it can be booked directly through Terra Travels. Our tour, at less than half the price of the cruise ship fee, included a private car, private tour guide, and only the two of us. Vines was incredibly knowledgeable of the area, the history, the nuances of the town and area. Our tour began walking along the water to see the 'singing stairs', and invention where there are pipes underground that play a tune based on the in inflow of water along the waterway. It is uniquely idyllic. Vines explained the Roman influence in the town, took us to several historic sites within the main ancient city, walked the old Roman road which is now lined with local shops and vendors, took us through the local market where we sampled incredible cheeses of the region, walked with us to the old port and main entrance to the walled ancient city, then, by private sedan, took us to the Ancient Vineyards (Kraljevski Vinogradi) to sample five wines--2 whites, one rose, two reds--along with some light snacks.
Vines was a delight! I wanted to get some flowers for our cabin and she took us to an exquisite florist (Sarita) who made an incredible arrangement of fresh flowers that lasted over a week for under 20 euros! While we were waiting we enjoyed a neighborhood café bar drinking coffee, Maraschino liquor, and local beer called Karlovacko. You will NOT get this personal and up-close tour anywhere else! And the price is half what you would pay aboard ship! Ask for Vines (pronounced Venus) and you will be Most Happy!
