Visiting Ancient Town Epidaurus from Athens

Visiting Ancient Town Epidaurus from Athens

Tour to Epidaurus is recommended for all history and architecture lovers. It is situated on the north eastern side of Peloponnese and it's about two hours of driving from Athens.

Ancient Epidaurus was named after Asclepius the healer, who was the son of the famous Greek god Apollo. In 1988. the Sanctuary of Asklepios at Epidaurus was declared as UNESCO's World Heritage Site. The most famous attraction of the Sanctuary of Asklepios is the Ancient Theater of Epidaurus, built in the 4th century BC and enlarged in the middle of the 2nd century BC. The Theater has overall 55 rows (14 000 seats) and equally good acoustics on each of them.

The Ancient Theater of Epidaurus is still used for performances of ancient Greek dramas. Everyone who wants to experience a live performance and perfect acoustics at this ancient theater has an opportunity for that every summer, at the annual Athens and Epidaurus Festival.

When taking a tour to Epidaurus from Athens, you will most likely visit Mycenae as well, a famous archaeological site only about 45 minutes of driving from Epidaurus. The archaeological sites of Mycenae and Tiryns, protected by UNESCO, are the imposing ruins of the two greatest cities of the Mycenaean civilization, which dominated the eastern Mediterranean world from the 15th to the 12th century B.C.
