The picturesque church of St. Mark is one of the oldest buildings in Zagreb and one of its symbols. Mentioned in the list of parish churches in the Cathedral statute from 1334 year. It was built in the 13th century, and from the first, Romanesque phase of construction are preserved window in the south wall and the base of the bell tower. Gothic vaults and sanctuary were built in the second half of the 14th century when the church got its most valuable part - a luxurious Gothic southern portal. This figuraly richest Gothic portal of Croatia was created in Parlerov workshop, one of the most famous medieval sculpture workshops. On the north-west wall is the oldest Zagreb emblem from 1499. The church was completely rebuilt in the second half of the 19th century according to the plans of the Viennese architect Friedrich Schmidt and Hermann Bolle and again restored in the early 20th century.On this occasion, its walls were painted by the famous painter Jozo Kljaković (1888th-1969th), and the altars set up with works of the famous sculptor Ivan Mestrovic.
