Why should you visit Franciscan Monastery?

Franciscan Monastery

The old Franciscan Monastery was originally not situated in its present location, adjacent to St Saviours Church and between the Placa and Fort Minčeta. The wars threatening the Dubrovnik Republic in the early 14th century made the Franciscans to move from the Pile area outside the city walls into the City. The construction of the Monastery began in 1317 and lasted for many years. It is nowadays considered a true jewel of Croatias cultural and artistic heritage.
Certain sections of the large Franciscan Monastery were destroyed in the course of time, especially in 1667 when a devastating earthquake befell the City. One can get the idea about the elegance and beauty of the original church only on the basis of the south portal with the Gothic architrave comprising an astonishing beautiful and moving Pieta. The statue of Mother of God holding her dead son on her knees from 1498 is a masterpiece of the Dubrovnik sculptors, the brothers Leonard and Petar Petrović.

The present day Franciscan Church was restored in the Baroque style. It houses the tomb of the great writer Ivan Gundulić. The Monastery cloister, the work of Mihoje Brajkov of Bar in the Late Romantic style, is considered one of the finest in Dalmatia at the time.

We did the GOT walking tour on 25th June. It was fantastic a great experience over 2 and a half hours. Josef our guide was brilliant very enthusiastic and knowledgeable. I wouldn´t have expected to be guided by someone who even participated in the film production. Iva has such a twinkling aura when she is speaking about GOT,- it means the world to her. She is not only able to explain everything in clear, good English but also inspire greenhorns 100% for Dubrovnik and its historical background.
