The TV Show Game of Thrones was mostly shot in Belfast, Northern Ireland. This includes most of the indoor scenes but also the outdoor scenes of Castle Black which was fully built for the filming. Apart from that, most other scenes where shot in other countries: Malta (Free City of Pentos and King's Landing), Croatia (Kings Landing, Qarth, Slavers Bay), Iceland (North of the wall scenes, the Vale of Arryn), Morocco (Astapor, Yunkai and Meereen in Slavers Bay), Spain (Dorne).
Concerning Dubrovnik, the Executive Producer David Benioff of GoT said "The minute we started walking around the city walls we knew that was it. You read the descriptions in the book and you come to Dubrovnik and that’s what the actual city is."
Dubrovnik was used mostly for filming the outdoor scenes of King's Landing throughout seasons 2 - 5. In season 6 filming for the most part moved to Spain. The whole city welcomed the crew and a lot of people where thrilled to be able to be a part of the show by being one of the extras in the show. One particular scene used more that 500 extras which was shown on the main street of Dubrovnik Stradun.
The Dubrovnik Tourist board also embraced the filming of Game of Thrones in Dubrovnik as it had a huge impact on the promotion of Dubrovnik as a tourist destination. They also prepared and printed maps of the filming locations which you can pick up from their office or you can download them here: front side and back side.
Now Game of Thrones is a big part of Dubrovnik and you will see many shops selling Game of Thrones souvenirs and memorabilia. There are also lots of travel agencies offering Game of Thrones tours which take you to the most famous filling locations and they will show you screen shots of the exact scenes when you get to the location. It is quite amazing walk on the exact same place where the famous actors in the television series walked during filming.
When deciding which Game of Thrones to take, there are several options. The classic Walking Game of Thrones tours cost about 20€ per person they last about 1.5 hours up to 2 hours. These tours include a live guide that will show you around the city and they all have screenshots from the TV show which they show you as you approach the filming locations. Most of the tours also include a visit to the Lovrijenac fortress but the ticket is usually not included in the price. If a tour listed here shows a bigger price then it's probably because the price includes the ticket to the fortress.
There are now also other possibilities, such as taking a tour to visit the filming locations that are situated outside the city. These tours are recommended after you take the walking tour in the city. They are a bit more expensive (since they include transportation) but offer visits to fantastic filming sights that are not included in the classic walking tours such as mount Srđ and the Trsteno botanical garden.
Some other combinations exist to the classic walking tour, such as a tour that includes the visit to the Lokrum island which is where the original throne from the TV show is situated or a tour which includes a short boat cruise around the city with the same boat that Daenerys Targaryen used to sail.
Don't forget the Dubrovnik is more than just a Game of Thrones filming location as the history of the city has stories which are as amazing as the ones told by George R. R. Martin. So most of the walking tours will not only talk about Game of Thrones but will give you an insight of the rich history of the city of Dubrovnik as well.
We wish you a great time in Dubrovnik and hurry up, winter is coming!
